In a draw held in the Caja Magica, with guest Carlota Martínez Cirez and tournament director Garbiñe Muguruza helping to pull out the numbers, the world’s best female players were given a glimpse of the enormous challenge facing them in the Spanish capital.

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka will have numerous obstacles in her path if she wants to keep her crown. The world No. 1 will play her opening match against Peyton Stearns or Lois Boisson, a semi-finalist at last year’s French Open. In a section of the draw replete with experienced players, Japan’s Naomi Osaka could await her in the last sixteen, setting up a clash between two multiple Grand Slam champions.

Sabalenka is bidding to become the first woman to lift four titles in the Caja Magica, a feat that would make her the most decorated WTA player in the tournament’s history. However, it is a milestone that may encounter fierce resistance even before the later rounds. The likes of Jasmine Paolini and Belinda Bencic are ones to watch in a potential quarter-final in a part of the draw where the Spanish contingent will be represented by Jessica Bouzas and Kaitlin Quevedo.

In a blockbuster top half of the draw, former champion Iga Swiatek looks set to provide a fascinating counterbalance to Aryna in a potential semi-final. Before she can focus on such lofty goals, though, the Pole will have to negotiate a section with danger at every turn. Australia’s Daria Kasatkina, American prodigy Iva Jovic and Spain’s powerhouse Paula Badosa are all possible rivals en route to the last sixteen.

Players with strong clay-court records like Elina Svitolina and Mirra Andreeva will further toughen Swiatek’s path to the quarter-finals.

The bottom half of the draw will be defined by the strength of the American contingent. Despite the lack of former champions in this sector, the competition promises to be intense from the very first point.

Elena Rybakina will be vying to build on the best season of her career and make a splash in Madrid, where her powerful hitting could wreak havoc. Riding the momentum of her clay-court title in Stuttgart this Sunday, the Kazakh will play her opener against Elena-Gabriela Buse or Antonia Ruzic in a section packed with big hitters like Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys before the last sixteen.

Anisimova, twice a Grand Slam finalist in 2025, looms as the most threatening presence in this part of the draw before the quarter-finals. The American, however, may have to face some home favourites, with Carlota Martínez Cirez and Cristina Bucsa among her possible early opponents. Emerging Filipina star Alexandra Eala will also be one to watch as she looks to make a breakthrough in Madrid.

In this lower part of the draw, one of the most loaded sectors of the tournament will feature third seed Coco Gauff and former runner-up Jessica Pegula as its main contenders. Both could stand in Rybakina’s way in a possible semi-final, in a part of the draw where young guns Linda Noskova and Victoria Mboko promise to inject some youth into proceedings.

A total of 96 female hopefuls now know their roads to glory in the Caja Magica. At one of the season’s toughest tournaments, where the imposing Manolo Santana Stadium will host the final rounds, the finest WTA talent is raring to go in the Spanish capital.

The stars of the WTA Tour discovered their fates this Sunday at the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open.
