On one of clay-court tennis’ most iconic courts, the Spaniard dug deep to reacquaint himself with victory, proving he can still endure the demands of the circuit’s slowest surface. For a battle-worn body like his, the rewards go far beyond the result itself.

“I’m very happy”, said the Spaniard after securing one of the grittiest victories of the 2026 season. “I have to thank the tournament for giving me the chance to play here again. Returning to these venues means a lot to me. Being able to compete in front of my people, my supporters, is something truly special”.

Carreño Busta meant every word he said. The player from Asturias made the most of the wildcard given to him by the tournament to settle a score; he had not won in the Caja Magica for 10 years, and his latest win reaffirms his new-found consistency. After finding his game on the ATP Challenger Tour, where he was champion in Murcia and a finalist in Alicante, the Asturias native is bidding for a fruitful fortnight in the Spanish capital.

“It was a tough match at first”, explained the Spaniard, who at one point found himself two points away from an early exit. “He was playing very aggressively, dominating every point. In the second set I was able to match him a bit and I think in the third I managed to feel more comfortable and that made the difference”.

At 34 years of age, Carreño Busta is looking for a successful conclusion to a career hampered by a right-elbow injury that threatened to end his time on the professional circuit. Now, ready to return to the biggest stages on the ATP Tour, the Asturian appreciates every opportunity he has to hit balls in anger, feel the warmth of the fans, and remember the feelings that once earned him a place among the 10 best players in the world.

“They were tough times for me. I even thought my career was ending at one point. Now I’m back, and I can play consecutive events. Having rhythm is very important for me, in my career I’ve always needed to play a lot of matches to feel competitive. I think that’s something I managed to do in the last 10 months”.

Carreño Busta has now been presented with a chance to continue enjoying his return to form in an all-Spanish clash. Pablo will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open. The two have never met before on tour, and the fans are licking their lips in anticipation.

Pablo Carreño Busta’s roar in the Manolo Santana Stadium was one of relief.
