This Sunday, the Manolo Santana Stadium will witness the first episode of a rivalry that could define an era in tennis. Brazilian Joao Fonseca and Spain\u2019s Rafael J\u00f3dar, the best two teenagers in the world, both born in 2006, are about to square off for the first time, with a ticket to the last sixteen up for grabs. The future has arrived at the Mutua Madrid Open.<\/p>\n

The atmosphere promises to be spectacular in the Caja Magica\u2019s centre stadium. J\u00f3dar, the world number 42, has become the home crowd\u2019s poster boy since the withdrawal of Carlos Alcaraz, while Fonseca, No. 31 in the ATP Rankings, is a phenom who is followed by hundreds of Brazilians wherever he plays.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoao is a tough opponent and I have to prepare well for that match. I have to play my own game and be ready in case things don\u2019t go as well. I have to try and hang tough in those moments. We\u2019ll see how it goes\u201d, J\u00f3dar said on Friday night after his 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Alex de Minaur, his first victory over a top-ten player.<\/p>\n

Fonseca has a win of similar dimensions under his belt, which he picked up in round one of the 2025 Australian Open against Andrey Rublev, who was then ranked number nine in the world. The result brought with it new-found fame for a Fonseca who would go on to win the titles in Buenos Aires and Basel to earn himself a place among the elite. J\u00f3dar had to wait a little longer to lift his first trophy; just a few weeks ago he won the ATP 250 in Marrakech to reaffirm his reputation as one of the most promising players on tour.<\/p>\n

Moreover, in Madrid J\u00f3dar is playing at home, and it shows. There is always electricity in the air in the Caja Magica when a home player is firing on all cylinders and entertaining the crowd. \u201cI\u2019m trying to enjoy the experience. It\u2019s amazing to play on a court like the Manolo Santana when it\u2019s practically full. A lot of people came to watch me today and I really enjoy that. Also, if things go well like they did today, then all the better\u201d, said the Spaniard on Friday night. \u201cBut yeah, my goal is always to enjoy myself and when I see so many people also enjoying watching me, that\u2019s what ultimately satisfies me\u201d.<\/p>\n

J\u00f3dar has now played two night sessions in Madrid with two wins. On Sunday the J\u00f3dar-Fonseca show will be the biggest draw of the afternoon in the Caja Magica. There is no doubt that the Madrid native has adapted perfectly to the local conditions. Fonseca is still an unknown quantity because his opponent, Marin Cilic, withdrew from his opener before the match started.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe first match against De Jong really helped me adapt to the conditions. I just played in Barcelona, where the conditions are very different and that match really helped me. Also playing in the Santana with the help of the fans had a lot to do with it\u201d, explained J\u00f3dar, who came through a tough challenge in his opener against Dutchman Jesper de Jong (2-6, 7-5, 6-4).<\/p>\n
