Kostyuk, Andreeva send out pre-RG warnings

They both have posted a tour-leading 12 wins so far this season on clay, they’ve clinched silverware on the red dirt, and have firmly established themselves among the favourites for Roland-Garros – Marta Kostyuk and Mirra Andreeva certainly had a Madrid to remember.

Kostyuk is a perfect 12-0 on clay this campaign, with back-to-back titles captured in Rouen and Madrid.

The Ukrainian knocked out two top-10 players, Jessica Pegula and Andreeva, on her way to the trophy and dropped just one set across her six matches in the Spanish capital.

Her first WTA 1000 crown comes with a career-high ranking of 15 in the world but Kostyuk insists she won’t get too carried away about her chances in Paris, given how she crashed out in the first round there last year.

“I had good runs in Madrid and Rome, and then I probably had high expectations for myself, I don’t know, but it was probably one of the most difficult losses in my career,” she reflected on Saturday.

“I also never really play good in Paris, so I’m coming back to the basics and what made me win here this week. I hope to be healthy, and that’s all that matters.”

As for Andreeva, a title run in Linz, a semi-final showing in Stuttgart, and now a final appearance in Madrid, put her in good stead for her upcoming clay events.

As a former Roland-Garros semi-finalist, the 19-year-old should be feeling confident when Paris comes around.

UNDEFEATED ON CLAY THIS SEASON 🧱

A message from the champ, @marta_kostyuk!#MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/DTPCze3rwn

— wta (@WTA) May 2, 2026

2. Sinner’s untouchable

Playing in Madrid for just the fourth time in his career, world No.1 Jannik Sinner showed up and showed out.

The Italian had never made it past the quarter-finals in any of his three previous appearances but this year he meant business as he stormed to the title, getting broken just twice in 61 service games, to become the first man in series history to win five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments.

The four-time major champion blitzed Alexander Zverev in a 57-minute final to extend his active winning streak to 23 matches in a row.

The 24-year-old Sinner has now completed his set of Masters 1000 finals – reaching the championship match in all nine of them – and has a chance to complete his set of Masters 1000 titles if he triumphs in Rome in two weeks’ time – a feat only achieved by Novak Djokovic as a 31-year-old back in 2018.

With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined for the rest of the clay season with a wrist injury, Sinner will be the outright favourite in Rome and Roland-Garros, where he could potentially complete the career Grand Slam.

“I think he’s very stable. He doesn’t have dips, he doesn’t have phases where he goes down. I think that’s why he’s world No.1. To me, that’s more spectacular, I think, keeping the level the whole time,” Zverev said of Sinner after the final.

A kind gesture 🧡 Sportsmanship above all@janniksin | @AlexZverev | #MMOPEN pic.twitter.com/MT3LFFVNNE

— #MMOPEN (@MutuaMadridOpen) May 3, 2026

3. Baptiste entertains in giant-slaying run

There have been a host of intriguing storylines over the past two weeks in Madrid but perhaps none have been as wild or dramatic as that of Hailey Baptiste.

The American reached a maiden WTA 1000 semi-final by navigating a tricky draw and some incredible ups and downs.

In her second match, Baptiste took on a ninth-ranked Jasmine Paolini and unleashed 14 aces on her way to a straight-sets win. That was just the third top-10 victory of Baptiste’s career.

In the round of 16, Baptiste served for a straight-sets win against Belinda Bencic but ultimately dropped a 95-minute second set by losing a tiebreak 16-14 to the Swiss, who saved SIX match points.

You’d think that would have taken the wind completely out of Baptiste’s sails but the 24-year-old from Washington DC shook off the disappointment and won the match in three sets.

What did she do next? She beat world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka of course, 7-6 in the third, in equally dramatic fashion.

Baptiste’s journey was halted by Andreeva but she walks away from Madrid with a milestone result at a WTA 1000, two additional top-10 wins, and a new career-high ranking of 25 in the world.

4. Fils in fierce form

Arthur Fils won the ATP 500 title in Barcelona, came to Madrid, reached the semi-finals to extend his winning streak to nine matches before losing to Sinner.

The 21-year-old Frenchman is enjoying a remarkable return from a back stress fracture he sustained at Roland-Garros last year, which kept him sidelined for eight months.

In seven tournaments he contested so far in 2026, Fils has reached at least the quarter-finals in six of them. Besides his trophy run in Barcelona and semi-final showing in Madrid, Fils reached the final in Doha and the semi-finals in Miami to tally up a healthy 22-6 win-loss record over the past three months.

The addition of Goran Ivanisevic to his team is clearly playing dividends, and Fils’ time away from tennis while injured has helped him approach the sport with passion and focus during this comeback.

“I think with Goran he’s helping me a lot with his experience,” Fils said in Madrid. “Of course, since two years, I did one hell of a job with Ivan (Cinkus) as well, and they are close friends. So it’s pretty easy to work with both of them. But, yeah, since Goran arrive also I have another way to see the things, you know. It’s pretty good.”

Fils will move back up to No.17 in the world rankings on Monday, just three spots shy of the career-high he hit in April last year.

5. Gap between Sabalenka and Rybakina shrinking

Sabalenka started the Mutua Madrid Open with a 2,395-point cushion between herself and second-ranked Elena Rybakina at the top of the WTA rankings.

With Sabalenka unable to defend her title by losing to Hailey Baptiste in the quarter-finals and Rybakina reaching the round of 16, that gap has narrowed to 1,555 points.

Sabalenka has a Rome quarter-final and a Roland-Garros final to defend over the next few weeks, while Rybakina has a title defence in Strasbourg and fourth-round points to protect in Paris.

Can Rybakina close in on Sabalenka by the end of the clay swing? That’ll be one of the biggest questions for the top two women as they depart Madrid.

6. Next Genners make a statement

Alexander Blockx, 21 years old. Rafael Jodar, 19 years old. Dino Prizmic, 20 years old. Nicolai Budkov Kjær, 19 years old.

Those are just some of the young names that made a splash in Madrid, showing that the next generation, alongside Joao Fonseca, is truly coming!

Blockx knocked out four consecutive seeds, including third-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime and 12th-seeded defending champion Casper Ruud to reach a maiden Masters 1000 semi-final. He’ll move up 33 spots in the rankings to land at a career-high No.36 in the world on Monday.

Spanish teen phenom Jodar was playing college tennis this time last year. He made his tour-level debut at the Australian Open four months ago and has gone to win 17 of his first 25 tour-level matches. That’s a better initiation to the big leagues than those of Rafael Nadal, Joao Fonseca, Alcaraz and even Roger Federer.

Jodar followed up his title run in Marrakech and semi-final showing in Barcelona with a quarter-final appearance in Madrid, where he had a marquee home crowd turn up for him every step of the way. He leaves the Spanish capital with a 12-2 record on clay so far this season and moves up to a career-high No.34 in the world on Monday. Not bad for a teenager who was ranked 686 just 12 months ago.

Ver esta publicación en Instagram

Una publicación compartida de #MMOPEN (@mutuamadridopen)

Prismic reached the Madrid third round as a qualifier, knocking out the likes of Matteo Berrettini and fourth-seeded Ben Shelton along the way.

Kjaer also qualified and made the third round, ousting Denis Shapovalov before getting stopped by Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner was caught watching Jodar practise with Kjaer during the tournament, and followed one of Jodar’s matches from the stands before they squared off in the quarters.

Even the world No.1 is curious about what these Next Genners have to offer.

7. Positive outlook for Zheng, Osaka

Zheng Qinwen’s stay in Madrid may have been short-lived but the Olympic champion’s two matches at the Caja Magica should be enough to give her a confidence boost heading into Rome and Roland-Garros.

The Chinese star played six solid sets in the Spanish capital – three of which earned her a win over Sofia Kenin and another three came in a loss to Rybakina.

Featuring a new service motion since her return from elbow surgery, Zheng struck 20 aces across her two outings in Madrid and is feeling positive about her overall form and says she has rediscovered her inner fire.

“Finally today when I lost the first set, I found a bit that extra energy and I think I need to keep finding that because that was the key to winning my past matches,” Zheng said after her win over Kenin.

Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka was relatively pleased by her performance in her first tournament since Miami, and pushed Sabalenka before falling to the world No.1 in three sets in the round of 16.

“I think just knowing how close it was. I feel like every game was super close. I think I realise I could potentially match her in power,” said the four-time Grand Slam champion.

“I feel like in Indian Wells I was a little overwhelmed. Here I did a little bit better. Obviously she’s the No.1 player in the world, so it was a really cool match for me to know that I’m like kind of there.”

Osaka said her coach of nine months, Tomasz Wiktorowski, has been giving her great belief and “he gives me a lot of structure. I appreciate that, because it’s not like during the match I’m confused on what I’m doing or anything like that.”

8. Life-changing breakthroughs

The names mentioned above weren’t the only ones to make waves at the Caja Magica.

For a couple of other participants, the Mutua Madrid Open was life-changing.

Qualifier Daniel Vallejo gave one of the most wholesome on-court interviews you’ll see this year after he beat former world No.3 Grigor Dimitrov in the first round.

He told the interviewer, Lee Goodall, he couldn’t believe he was speaking to him after listening to him all these years on Tennis TV.

“For me this is unbelievable. It looks like a movie, I don’t know what’s happening,” said Vallejo, who became the first Paraguayan in history to win a match at the Mutua Madrid Open and went on to reach the third round.

The 22-year-old Vallejo cracked the top 100 for the first time last month and will hit a career-high 83 on Monday.

Meanwhile, Madrid native Daniel Merida arrived at his home tournament ranked 102 in the world, and fresh off a recent run to the Bucharest final, as a qualifier.

The 21-year-old had to beat the same player, Marco Trungelliti, twice in Madrid, once in the final round of qualifying and again in the opening round of the main draw after the Argentine was given a lucky loser spot. Merida then upset 26th-seeded Corentin Moutet before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas in round three. His reward is a top-100 debut as he shoots up the rankings to a career-best 85 in the world post-Madrid.

“It’s like a movie” 🍿

Qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo taking it all in after defeating Dimitrov#MMOpen pic.twitter.com/PGc2WHDzAQ

— Tennis TV (@TennisTV) April 23, 2026

9. Spotlight on women coaches

It’s not every day you get a tennis final at this level between two players coached by women, but we were lucky enough to witness that in Madrid, as Kostyuk, guided by Sandra Zaniewska, and Andreeva, led by Conchita Martinez, squared off in the championship match.

Zaniewska has been part of Team Kostyuk since mid-2023, while Martinez has been coaching Andreeva for the past two years.

Last year in Madrid, Andreeva spoke about the special bond she has with Martinez, and what she felt the difference was between working with female and male coaches.

“I feel like maybe she understands me more,” Andreeva said. “Sometimes, I don’t know, my mood changes fast. Or she kind of also talks to me a lot to see what’s going on, how I feel. And I feel like male coaches, they’re also paying attention to that. But not that much. That’s the difference I feel. And with Conchita, we always try to talk if something’s bothering me or something’s bothering her. So we’re always having a conversation and we’re always talking.”

Zaniewska, a former player from Poland who coached Petra Martic in her career-best years from 2017-2019, has been a key factor in Kostyuk’s uptick in results over the past two years.

“I’m a person who talks, and it was very difficult for me because when you work with a male coach, most of them don’t talk,” Kostyuk told WTA Insider in an interview in 2023.

They cannot express what you feel and adjust. I’ve been coached by my mom for most of my life, by a woman. I’m very happy and I really hope that examples of mine and Sandra will bring more coaches on tour and the girls will trust more women.”

Saturday’s final was a great celebration of women coaches succeeding at the highest level.

10. Top ten need matches

While Sinner and Zverev have every reason to be feeling confident heading into Rome and Paris, most of the top-10 crew will be desperate for more match play to feel ready for Roland-Garros in three weeks’ time.

Novak Djokovic has yet to play a match on clay this season. Ben Shelton won Munich but lost his opener in Madrid. Auger-Aliassime was bounced in the third round at the Caja Magica and is 3-2 on the red dirt so far this campaign. Taylor Fritz is out dealing with knee tendinitis and hasn’t played since Miami and is officially out of Rome. Alex de Minaur managed just four games in his opening loss to Jodar in Madrid and is 3-3 on the surface in 2026. Daniil Medvedev is his typical tortured self on clay although his Madrid Open (R16) was infinitely better than his 6-0, 6-0 loss in Monte-Carlo.
