Carballés, Munar, Kuhn and Cervantes to play in the Mutua Madrid Open qualifiers

With just 10 days left until this year’s Mutua Madrid Open kicks off, the tournament organisers have announced several invitees for the qualifying rounds, which start on Friday 5 May on the courts of the Caja Mágica. In recognition of the hard work from the Spanish players, the management has granted four wildcards to Roberto Carballes, Carlos Taberner, Jaume Munar and Nicola Kuhn, who will be trying to make the most of their chance to reach the final draw.

At 24 years of age, Roberto Carballes will be looking to continue his progress with a solid performance at the Mutua Madrid Open. The Granada native, world number 123, has stepped his game recently, playing in his first Grand Slam final draw last year at Roland Garros and earlier this season coming very close to repeating the feat at the Australian Open, where he bowed out in the qualifiers.

Another of the big attractions in the qualifiers will be Nicola Kuhn’s return to the Caja Mágica after he won the Under-12 Mutua Madrid Open five years ago. The 17-year-old player, who will be back on the same courts where he entertained the locals with his exhibition in the Junior Davis Cup (he was named player of the tournament), is one of the most promising players in the Armada and will have a chance to prove it in the qualifiers.

Like him, Jaume Munar, another of Spanish tennis’ young hopefuls, will be bidding to qualify for the final draw in Madrid. The Mallorcan, who was called up to the Davis Cup team for the first time for the tie against Serbia, is from an island that has produced two of the biggest players in Spain’s history: Rafael Nadal y Carlos Moyà.

Finally, Carlos Taberner will also take part in a qualifying stage that is packed with Spaniards, as the Mutua Madrid Open organisers bid to support Madrid natives. As a result, once again this year, high calibre tennis will be on display from the very first day of the competition in the Caja Mágica, with some of the best players in the qualifying rounds for the final draw.
