Carla Suárez: “I should have been more aggressive in the third set”

The Canary Islander came close but was unable to take the final step into the next round as US player Vandeweghe knocked her out in Wednesday’s clash on court 3 in the Caja Mágica, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5. This was despite the support of the public, which “allowed me to win games and feel that the match was level”. The key for Suárez was her lack of “aggressiveness in the third set, I should have been braver”.

Early in the final set everything was going to plan, the Spaniard had a 3-0 lead but “I never thought the match was won”, even less so when facing a player “with a good serve who likes two or three shot rallies”, which made her feel “uncomfortable”.

Despite the defeat, she is positive about her performance at the Mutua Madrid Open as “it had been a while since I had played three matches in a big tournament, I was on court for a number of hours and that could serve me well in the future”.
