The quarterfinals in the men’s doubles are now set in stone, as are the semis in the women’s team competition at the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open. As ever, the doubles is giving fans in the Caja Magica plenty to shout about as they enjoy the fireworks.
The women’s competition will not see another home winner this year. Cristina Bucsa, last year’s champion, bowed out in the first round alongside Aoyama losing 12-10 in a super-tiebreak to the tournament’s sixth seeds Danilina and Khromacheva. Olympic silver medallists Shnaider and Andreeva also packed their bags before the quarters to Haddad Maia and Siegemund, who would later lose to doubles specialists Hsieh-Ostapenko.
The results mean the semifinals will see Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger take on Elise Mertens and Veronika Kudermetova, while in the top half of the draw Sorana Cirstea and Anna Kalinskaya will face Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh. Both Azarenka (2023) and Su-Wei Hsieh (2019) already have a doubles title to their name in the Caja Magica, but none of the other six have tasted triumph in Madrid. The player from Taipei, who is competing alongside the Latvian Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, is surely one of the favourites for the title.
In the men’s competition, Granollers is the only Spaniard still standing in any of the four draws. It is a special tournament for him, he hit the jackpot four years ago in Madrid playing with Horacio Zeballos, with whom he still shares a court. Also, twelve months ago in the Caja Magica, he climbed to the top of the world rankings thanks to reaching the quarterfinals after a dramatic match that ended 17-15 in the super-tiebreak while the Argentinian was carrying an injury. It was a day that will never be forgotten.
In this draw, the top three seeds are still alive and kicking. Australian Open champions Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten (2) will play the Spanish-Argentine team (5). Elsewhere, the number one team in the world Marcelo Arévalo and Mate Pavic will be looking for their own place among the best four at the tournament when they take on sixth seeds Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus. Pavic and Mektic were finalists together in 2021 and will now be squaring off against one another as they both seek to repeat the feat.
For their part, German pair Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, the third seeds, will pit their wits against Belgium’s Sander Gille and Pole Jan Zielinski. Surprise package of the draw Christian Harrison and Evan King will play the last quarterfinal against Argentinian duo Molteni-González.
