The stars of the WTA discover their routes to the title in Madrid

The biggest names in women’s tennis now know their road to the final in the Caja Magica, where one of the most coveted WTA 1000 titles is at stake. The draw took place on Sunday for the main draw of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open, marking the start of what promises to be a thrilling tournament. The clay of the Spanish capital is ready to provide the stage for two weeks of intense world-class competition on the courts.

World No. 1 Sabalenka, who reached the final in three of the last four editions of the tournament, is bidding to extend her love affair with the Caja Magica. The two-time champion will start her campaign in the top half of the draw against a qualifier, but she will soon cross paths with some big-name players. The versatile Elise Mertens could be on the other side of her net in round three and former quarter-finalist Anisimova could be her last-sixteen opponent.

With her sights set firmly on the later rounds, Sabalenka may well clash with Paula Badosa in a mouth-watering quarter-final. The Catalonian still boasts the best result of a home player in the event’s history having reached the semis and she will be looking to make another splash this year. However, the Begur native will have to come through a sector that includes names like Marta Kostyuk and Zheng Qinwen, who have proven they are dangerous on clay.

The second sector of the draw is set to be a thriller from the get-go. Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur could have a rematch of their 2022 final in round three. This section of the draw also includes some of the biggest candidates to the throne in Madrid. Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, last year’s French Open runner-up, will test her mettle on the clay in a route that also includes big hitting Kazakh Elena Rybakina and the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, who was crowned champion on the surface just a few hours ago.

In the lower half of the draw, defending champion Iga Swiatek returns to the Spanish capital intent on underlining her position as the player to beat on clay. The Pole could start her tournament against Filipina Alexandra Eala, who managed to defeat her earlier this season. Youthfulness could be a constant on Iga’s road to the final, which includes the Czech Linda Noskova as a possible round-three opponent. Potential clashes with Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys could provide a significant threat to the Pole before she reaches the quarterfinals.

The American Coco Gauff will also be one of the favourites to reach that last-eight. The fourth seed, who has never progressed from the last-sixteen in Madrid, will have little respite on the clay, with Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska as her possible first opponent. Names such as Leylah Fernández and Beatriz Haddad Maia will ensure the former French Open runner-up will have to work hard if she is to make her mark.

In a half of the draw that is replete with talent, many eyes will be on Mirra Andreeva after her sensational start to the season. Conchita Martínez’s understudy, who already has two WTA 1000 crowns to her name in 2025, returns to Madrid all set to establish herself as one of the biggest names on the women’s tour. With an opener against Renata Zarazúa or Marie Bouzkova, she will attempt to take the reins in a sector that includes players of the stature of Karolina Muchova and Liudmila Samsonova. A possible clash with Gauff in the quarterfinals is just an example of what one of the most attractive sectors in the competition could throw up.

In addition, Spaniards Jessica Bouzas (vs. Mayar Sherif) and Carlota Martínez Círez, invited by the tournament organisers, will ensure home fans will have plenty to shout about in a draw that is replete with talent.

In total, 96 players will be dreaming of lifting the trophy in the Manolo Santana Stadium and joining the prestigious winners’ circle in the Spanish capital.

The women’s singles draw at the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open will be played from Tuesday 22 April to Saturday 3 May.
