In a repeat of its unprecedented initiative last year, the Mutua Madrid Open will again be bringing tennis to the centre of Madrid in spectacular style, installing a clay court on Plaza Mayor that will replicate every last detail of those played on by the pros in the Caja Mágica during the tournament. The court will be available for fans to hire so they can play tennis with an historic backdrop in Spain’s capital.
Built to International Tennis Federation (ITF) standards, the court will be available to hire from the 6th to the 26th of April from 10:00 to 20:00. Bookings (of 1 hour) are now available on Playtomic (https://cutt.ly/lw3V3BDn) at the symbolic price of 1 euro.
Gerard Tsobanian, CEO of the Mutua Madrid Open, was very satisfied as construction began on Monday the 1st of April: “The court we installed in Colon last year was a resounding success. The available bookings sold out quickly and all the fans were able to play tennis in incredible surroundings. This time, we’ve chosen Plaza Mayor because of everything it means to the city and to tourism. We’re confident that the court will surprise everyone again. I’d like to thank the Madrid City Council for their collaboration in making a court that will allow every citizen to play on an identical reproduction of that of the Manolo Santana Stadium a reality”.
Feliciano López, director of the Mutua Madrid Open, spoke about the experience last year before he tried out the new court on Plaza Mayor: “I was lucky enough to play several times in Colon last year and it was amazing to be able to step onto a tennis court in such an emblematic corner of Madrid. I can’t wait to be able to play there, surrounded by so much history. I’m sure all the fans will also be excited to do so after the response we had last year in Colon”.
The Mutua Madrid Open’s court on Plaza Mayor forms part of the promotion campaign for the 2024 tournament, which will take place in the Caja Mágica from the 22nd of April to the 5th of May.
