No farewell for David Ferrer in Madrid

7 May 2019 could be a historic day in David Ferrer’s career. Tuesday saw him take to the Manolo Santana Stadium in the last tournament of his career at the Mutua Madrid Open. However, it will not be the last time he does so. The player from Alicante won the right to keep competing for at least one more day in the Caja Mágica, after beating his compatriot Roberto Bautista 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

The Javea native would like to say goodbye to the tour with the same trait that has defined his game throughout his career; consistency. Even in his final moments he still appears competitive. In all six tournaments he has chosen to play this season (Auckland, Buenos Aires, Acapulco, Miami, Barcelona and Madrid) he has won at least one match.

However, he has a total of 8 victories from the13 matches played so far, while in Madrid he managed to improve his record of wins and defeats to 23-15. Also, Ferrer will now hang up his racquet having won a match every time he has participated in the Caja Mágica.

Ferrer closed out match number 1,110 of his career and increased his victory haul to 734, putting him 12th on the list of all-time winners. In addition, his 27 titles can only be bettered by two Spaniards in the Open Era, Manuel Orantes and Rafael Nadal.
