The action at the Mutua Madrid Open is non-stop and Wednesday’s schedule is set to serve up another helping of world-class tennis. The 4pm match on centre court will again feature the most attractive contest of the day when world number one Novak Djokovic begins his quest for the title. The Serbian, who has delighted fans at the Caja Mágica with some spectacular training sessions this week, will aim to take his work on the practice courts on to Manolo Santana Stadium when he faces Borna Coric, who saw off the challenge of Nicolás Almagro on Tuesday in a two-set victory.
It has to be remembered that Djokovic arrived in Madrid off the back of a surprise second-round loss to Jiri Vesely in Monte Carlo, which the world number one will be eager to make up for as quickly as possible and what better way than to shine from the outset in Madrid as is his custom.
That match brings the curtain down on a mouth-watering day session on centre court that starts with a fascinating match-up between Feliciano López – the only player to have contested every edition of the Mutua Madrid Open – and Roberto Bautista. Following the all-Spanish affair is another not-to-be-missed encounter between sixth seed Simona Halep and 10th seed Timea Bacsinszky.
The other show courts and the Tennis Garden will also play host to some big-name draws. French Open champion Stan Wawrinka will take on Nick Kyrgios while Victoria Azarenka plays Louisa Chirico and Daria Gavrilova faces defending champion Petra Kvitova. Another stand-out contest features Pablo Carreño, fresh from his scintillating victory over Grigor Dimitrov, against Gilles Simon.
