The Mutua Madrid Open officially kicked off on Monday with the qualifying rounds getting underway. As has become tradition in recent years, tournament director Feliciano López was waiting for the first fan to enter the Caja Magica to give them a prize.
At a few minutes past 9:30 on Monday morning a fan passed through the turnstiles and found himself standing next to Feliciano López, who had with him a folder containing two tickets for the men’s final on 4 May.
The lucky winner, a 20-year-old man, was aware that Feliciano López had given out the prize in previous editions and, with that knowledge, he made his way to the Caja Magica gates many hours before they opened.
“I arrived last night on a flight from Rome and when I found out about the tickets, that the first to arrive would get some, I said ‘I’ll wait there’”, he said excitedly with the tickets tucked away in a safe place. “I’ve been waiting since the early hours of the morning. It was worth it in the end”.
