Arthur Fils: The Frenchman preparing to conquer Madrid

Arthur Fils has touched down at the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open with perfect timing. The French tennis player, who is no longer simply a promising youngster but now a force to be reckoned with on the circuit, arrives at the Caja Magica with the Conde de Godó trophy in hand. His recent victory in Barcelona has not only given him his biggest clay court title to date, it also consolidated his mental strength, having now proven he is capable of mastering the most demanding of stages.

The big development in Fils’ camp this season was the arrival of Goran Ivanisevic on his coaching team in February. His partnership with the Croatian coach, who was the architect of much of Novak Djokovic’s recent success, has transformed the Frenchman’s game in just a few months.

“He’s an exceptional champion, Grand Slam winner, and has coached many, many champions,” said Fils when announcing his agreement with Ivanisevic. “He’s helping me throughout the season. We’re going to give it a go, but I think it’s good for me. Perhaps it’s the best thing for me to have his experience as a coach and as a player. I’m very, very happy he’s joined us on this long journey”, added the Frenchman, who will play his Madrid opener against the winner of the clash between Peru’s Ignacio Buse and fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

Under Ivanisevic’s guidance, Fils has evolved from being a physical, explosive player to a much more tactical and composed competitor in moments of pressure. Barely a couple of months after they began working together, Fils has made an incredible leap: runner-up in Doha, quarter-finals in Indian Wells, semi-finals in Miami, and champion in Barcelona. He has climbed from number 40 to number 25 in the ATP Rankings in a matter of weeks.

The conditions in Madrid, with its characteristic altitude, are a perfect match for Fils’ style. The speed of the ball in the Spanish capital increases the potency of his serve and allows his flat shots to inflict greater damage on defensive specialists. After triumphing in Barcelona, the challenge for the Frenchman will be managing the physical toll of an intense week and quickly adapting to the higher bounce of Madrid.

Arthur Fils arrives in the Manolo Santana Stadium with nothing to lose and the kind of momentum that only a recent title can provide. With Ivanisevic’s technical nous behind him and his exceptional physique, the Frenchman stands out as one an opponent nobody will want to see in their section of the draw. In 2026, Fils is no longer aiming to cause an upset, he’s looking to confirm that he is ready to fight for the biggest titles on the calendar.
