The 2023 Mutua Madrid Open 2023 kicked off on Monday in the Spanish capital. In an event held on Plaza de Colon, one of Madrid’s most emblematic sites, the curtain was raised on a spectacular tournament. The best players in the world have started to arrive in the city, where they will put on two weeks of unforgettable tennis in the Caja Mágica.

José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the mayor of Madrid; Ignacio Garralda, President of Mutua Madrileña, and Feliciano López, the tournament’s director; were accompanied by the defending singles champions Ons Jabeur and Carlos Alcaraz, who produced some memorable moments on the tournament’s clay courts one year ago.

In an edition that will include larger main draws, now with 96 players in the singles competitions, the Mutua Madrid Open is preparing for an exceptional atmosphere in the Spanish spring. It is a truly global tournament with over two decades of history and tradition.

“I’m here to enjoy myself and to create enjoyment for others”, said first seed Alcaraz, who will be trying to mount a successful defence of his throne in the Manolo Santana Stadium, something that has only ever been achieved by Rafael Nadal in the history of the men’s event. “Playing in Madrid and having the support of the fans in Spain is a unique feeling,” added the Murcia native.

The main draws at the 2023 Mutua Madrid Open will be played from Tuesday 25 April to Sunday 7 May in the Caja Mágica.
