Heliovaara/Patten, kings of the Caja Magica

Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten claimed the men’s doubles title on Saturday at the Mutua Madrid Open, beating Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 in a thrilling final. On a rainy day in the Spanish capital, Fin and Briton held firm under the roof of the Manolo Santana Stadium to consolidate themselves as one of the best teams on the ATP Tour.

“I’d like to thank the tournament for organising such an amazing event for us”, Heliovaara said during the trophy ceremony. “Being Finnish and British, we’re always happy to be playing indoor as that’s what we do in Finland most of the year”.

The third seeds came out on top of a topsy-turvy battle, complimenting each other perfectly to take the victory after one hour and 22 minutes of tennis. It looked like it may be plain sailing for the eventual champions after the first set. However, Heliovaara and Patten would have to dig deep to get their hands on the trophy. The Fin and Briton showed nerves of steel when it mattered most, coming back from 0-4 in the match tiebreak to occupy the throne in the Caja Magica.

The champions proved they are at ease with the peculiarities of doubles, where danger is always lurking around the corner on the road to any title. Heliovaara and Patten saved three match points in the second round against French pair Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti, a pivotal moment on their way to glory in Madrid.

The Fin and Briton are sitting pretty in the No. 1 spot in the PIF ATP Doubles Rankings on the back of a stunning season, in which they have notched up four titles as a team. Heliovaara and Patten have pulled away at the top thanks to victories in Adelaide, Doha, Dubai and Madrid, reaffirming their run of form as a pair.

Heliovaara and Patten’s men’s doubles trophy cabinet is starting to look crowded. The Finnish-British duo, who first joined forces in 2024, now have a collection of 12 titles, including the ATP Finals, two Grand Slam tournaments and, as of today, two ATP Masters 1000s.

For their part Andreozzi and Guinard fell at the final hurdle in their bid for a second ATP Masters 1000 title of the season, having opened their account in Indian Wells. Thanks to their campaign in Madrid, the Argentine and Frenchman are now among the best teams of 2026 and will climb from No. 5 to No. 3 in the PIF ATP Doubles Team Rankings.

Congratulations, guys”, Patten added, addressing Andreozzi and Guinard. “You’re having an incredible year, you’re one of the best pairs in the world at the moment. We enjoy some of our matches against you, others we hate! They’re always crazy”.
