Mladenovic and Garcia conquer Madrid

Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia were crowned women’s doubles champions at the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday after defeating the top-ranked pair in the world, Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis, 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 28 minutes.

Playing together for the first time in Madrid, Mladenovic and Garcia were presented with their trophies — which are made of recycled glass from the Spanish capital and crafted by Ecovidrio — on centre court by tournament director Manolo Santana.

The French fifth seeds’ run of form has been incredible since they joined forces with an eye on Olympic Glory in Rio. Of eight tournaments Mladenovic and Garcia have contested, they have reached the final in five and won three. Their triumph in Madrid was their 13th consecutive victory and the second time in the space of a week they have beaten Mirza and Hingis — who have dominated the doubles scene in recent seasons — following their title win in Stuttgart.

In a game of twists and turns, the key for both pairs was to achieve one break more than the other. In the opening set serve was broken on seven occasions and in the second, when service games were much more precise, Mladenovic and Garcia saved all five of Mirza and Hingis’ opportunities to break while capitalizing on one of the seven they carved out against the world number ones.

Mladenovic and Garcia’s triumph at the Mutua Madrid Open, a Premier Mandatory event, will strengthen their position in the Road to Singapore standings for a place at the season-ending WTA Finals, where Hingis and Mirza are the reigning champions. In the meantime, Mladenovic and Garcia are the queens of Madrid.
