Párrizas and Burillo progress to the WTA main draw

Nuria Párrizas and Irene Burillo came through WTA qualifying on Tuesday at the Mutua Madrid Open. The Spanish pair defeated the German Tamara Korpatsch (6-3, 7-5) and Colombian player Emiliana Arango (7-6[2], 6-4), respectively.

For the player from Zaragoza, it will be her first experience in the main draw in the Spanish capital, while the Granada native reached round two last year. Aliona Bolsova was unable to make it a triple success story for Spain. The world No.130 lost to Polish player Magdalena Frech 6-4, 7-5.

Another name that will be among the 96 players battling it out for the title in the Caja Mágica is that of Eugenie Bouchard. The Canadian beat US player Elizabeth Mandlik 6-3, 6-2 and will be opting for a repeat of her quarter-final performance of 2017, still her best result on the clay of the Spanish capital.

Clara Burel and Dayana Yastremska provided the biggest upsets of the qualies by seeing off first and second seeds. The Frenchwoman defeated Bulgarian player Viktoriya Tomova, after a comeback, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 28 minutes of tennis, while the Ukrainian breezed past Austrian player Julia Grahber, 6-1, 6-2.

Other players to earn one of the twelve empty spaces in the main draw are Sara Errani (6-7[7], 7-5, 6-2 vs. Jodie Burrage), Czech player Marieta Vondrousova (6-7[7], 6-1, 6-0 vs. Taylor Townsend), the Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (4-6, 6-2, 6-3 vs. Kimblerly Birrell), Romanian player Elena-Gabriela Ruse (6-4, 6-3 vs. Leolia Jeanjean), the German Laura Siegemund (6-4, 6-1 vs. Kamilla Rakhimova), and the Dutch Arantxa Rus (7-5, 6-3 vs. Anna-Lena Friedsam).

In parallel with the conclusion of the qualifying round, the first matches of the MMOPEN WTA main draw also got underway. Several of the top seeds now know the names of their first opponents. Aryna Sabalenka, the 2021 champion, will face Sorana Cirstea (6-3, 3-6, 6-1 vs. Lauren Davis).

Czech three-time champion (2011, 2015 and 2018) Petra Kvitova will face German player Julie Niemeier (6-4, 6-2 vs. Xinyu Wang), while French fifth seed Carolina Garcia will face Yulia Putintseva (6-4, 6-4 vs. Claire Liu) and Spaniard Paula Badosa will take on Italian player Elisabetta Cocciaretto (6-3, 7-6[5] vs. Barbora Strycova).
