Nadal, Djokovic and Murray gun for the quarters

Having come through their openers, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, the last three Mutua Madrid Open champions will be bidding for the quarter-finals in the Caja Mágica.

Defending champion Novak Djokovic, who came out on top of his debut against Nicolás Almagro, will now meet another home player, Feliciano López. They will play in the second match on the Manolo Santana court, followed by world number one Andy Murray, as he takes on one of the most promising young talents in the game, Croatian player Borna Coric.

The standout match of the day will see Rafael Nadal take on Nick Kyrgios in the clash that opens the night session (starting at 20.00) on centre court. Other mouth-watering ties include a clash of one-handed backhands between Grigor Dimitrov and Dominic Thiem, an enticing encounter between Kei Nishikori and David Ferrer and experience versus youth, as Alexander Zverev takes on Tomas Berdych.

Halep stays alive
Simona Halep is still in the game. Last year’s champion managed to hold off a stubborn Sam Stosur and now faces a stern challenge against US player Coco Vandeweghe, who sent Carla Suárez packing.

The tournament’s breakthrough player, Eugenie Bouchard, will bring the day’s play to a close on centre court when she meets 2015 finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova. The other two quarter-finals will be played by some of the surprise packages at this year’s Mutua Madrid Open: Kiki Bertens vs. Anastasija Sevastova and Kristina Mladenovic vs. Sorana Cirstea.
